For most pet owners, our cats and dogs are furry family members, and we never want to see them suffer. You’d do anything to help them maintain wellness so they can live a long life free from pain or other problems. And with the health-promoting benefits of CBD rising in popularity, you might be wondering how it can benefit your cats and dogs.
CBD works similarly in pets as it works in humans.
That’s because all mammals have what is known as an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which works to regulate the other systems of the body. Because CBD affects your pet’s ECS, they can experience similar potential benefits to humans. These health benefits include maintaining things like:
- Inflammatory system
- Digestive system
- Joints and mobility
- Heart health
- Appetite and nausea
- Brain health for aging pets
Whether or not your furry friend is experiencing health challenges, it’s been reported that CBD for pets can be a wonderful way to enhance their overall health and wellness.
Not all CBD pet products are equal.
The biggest question pet owners have about incorporating CBD is safety. Is CBD safe for pets? The short and sweet answer is yes! However, not all CBD products are created equal. A little known fact is that CBD products sold in marijuana dispensaries are subjected to much more rigorous testing than CBD products sold at your generic retail store. Why? The growth and sale of cannabis is highly state regulated and independently tested, therefore, the CBD derived from cannabis is also regulated and laboratory tested. Contrast that with hemp, and hemp-based CBD, which are not subjected to multiple layers of testing nor as much regulation. So when looking at CBD for your pet, the higher quality products tend to be sold in dispensaries.
Will My Pet Get High?
You also may be wondering if CBD will alter the way your pet feels. Will it make them “high?” You can rest assured that the answer is no. CBD formulated for pets has negligible amounts of THC. For example, our line of CBD Pet Tinctures contains only 1 mg of THC in the 1 oz. bottle. That means a full 1 ml dropper serving contains only .03 mg of THC.
Pet safety is a top priority for us because we love our pets just as much as you love yours! We’ve done some pretty extensive research into pets and THC, and discovered from the journal Topics in Companion Animal Medicine that the minimum lethal oral THC dose for animals is more than 3 g/kg. Which would be over 3000 mg of THC per 2 pounds of an animal! You’ve got nothing to worry about by giving your pet .03 mg of THC in a serving of CBD Pet Tincture.
CBD for Dogs vs. CBD for Cats
You might be wondering if a CBD product that’s formulated for pets can be used the same way with both cats and dogs. That’s a great question because there are some key differences between the two. The most significant difference is dosage, due to the fact that dogs usually weigh a lot more than cats. But the truth is every pet is different. Therefore, you may need to do some experimentation to find the dose that works best for your pet.
With that said, we recommend following the dosing instructions that are included on the label of your CBD pet product. If it’s a cannabis tincture, it’s easiest to administer by mixing a few drops onto your pet’s food. Alternatively, you can put them directly into your pets’ mouth, but that might prove to be difficult!
If you are interested in trying CBD for your pets, we invite you to check out our line of CBD Pet Tinctures. They come in three delicious flavors your cat or dog will love: bacon, chicken and salmon.
*Please note that even in low doses THC can potentially cause adverse reactions. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions carefully and consult with your veterinarian if you have any questions.
LivWell makes no claims regarding the health and medical benefits of cannabis.
